Confront The Past, Change The Future
Type:
Artists Involved: Kanisha Dabreo and Quentin VerCetty as mentor.
MEDIUM: Digital art
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:The Confront the Past, Change the Future project was commissioned by the City of Toronto as part of its Emancipation Month celebrations. AstroSankofa was tasked with providing a selection of artists from our collective to propose ideas around the theme of emancipation. Three artists were shortlisted based on their submissions: Trudell Wallace, Kenesha DiBrio, and Andre Mendez.
Following a careful review, the City of Toronto decided to move forward with Kenesha DiBrio's proposal, as her concept resonated strongly with the overall vision of the project. Her work, a three-panel art piece, became the central focus of the campaign.
The artwork was prominently displayed across the city, appearing in bus shelters, subway stations, and on advertising screens throughout Toronto during the month of August. Its visibility across various public spaces played a key role in promoting awareness and fostering conversations around the legacy of emancipation and its continuing relevance in contemporary society.
